BellSouth�s tradition of service began in 1879 � about four years
after the invention of the telephone. BellSouth has a vested interest
in the long-term viability of Louisiana. Our 6,000 employees live
here and work here. They volunteer their time supporting numerous
educational initiatives such as Job Shadowing, Junior
Achievement and NetDay activities, which enrich the educational
experiences of our young people. They also participate in other
community service projects in an effort to make this great state an
even better place in which to live, to work and to raise a family.
I am proud of the volunteer efforts of our active employees, and
equally proud of the contributions made by our 4,500 retired
employees, who continue to volunteer their time and energy to
improve life in their communities. As a corporation, BellSouth has
also contributed nearly $3.5 million during the past five years alone
to fund key education initiatives in this state. These contributions
range from endowed professorships at numerous colleges and universities,
to teacher mini-grants for elementary and secondary education.
